Seeing as the festive period is upon us and seeing as that period nearly always leads to an excess of calories, sugar and alcohol consumption, I thought that the readership might benefit from an article on the subject, specifically how certain supplements can help combat the damage induced by this sort of overconsumption.

I will split this article into the 2 ‘worst’ offenders, i.e. sugar and alcohol.

Alcohol

Some of you reading this may be teatotal, some may be heavy drinkers, but I suspect the majority will be like me; the occasional drinker who inevitably consumes more alcohol over the festive period month than usual, simply because of the amount of social situations that arise. My birthday is in January, which only adds to the list of social events and this year, a good friend is getting married in the week before Christmas, so that is another point of potential alcohol abuse.

Why is alcohol bad?

Alcohol is damaging to the body and to the waistline for a number of reasons and I will list them later but really the damage comes from two main characteristics. Alcohol is a poison/toxin (hence the term ‘intoxicated’). It also has a large number of calories per gram (7kcal/g) – almost as many calories as fat (9kcal/g)!

Toxicity: Alcohol is proven to be a highly addictive neurotoxin. The ‘drunken’ effect of alcohol is due to the fact that you are poisoning yourself and your nervous system. Now this article is not here to judge or dissuade you from drinking, but merely to discuss the effects of alcohol from an objective perspective.

What can I do about alcohol toxicity?

The infrequent drinker does not really have to concern his or herself over the addiction potential of alcohol, but should still give thought to the toxicity in my opinion. You see the way that the liver processes alcohol leads to the creation of acetaldehyde and hydrogen peroxide, both of which are highly damaging to surrounding tissue. Ad unfortunately, all the hydration in the world won’t affect the creation of these nasty metabolites nor speed up their removal.

…But fortunately there IS one product that has been intelligently designed to:

  1. Block the creation of hydrogen peroxide in the liver by temporarily blocking the non-oxidative pathway in the liver using a specific amino acid.
  2. Speed up the breakdown of acetaldehyde into non-toxic sub-metabolites by using a different amino acid.

Although the packaging states that the product is best consumed before alcohol, the best results (in my experience) are obtained by taking one dose at or near the start of your alcohol consumption and then one dose before bed. This nearly always results in a clear head the next day.

Why does alcohol make me fat?

Alcohol is what is known as a ‘fat sparer’. In other words, because alcohol is a poison, your body prioritises its metabolism before metabolising fat, carbohydrate or protein from a meal. So a couple of glasses of wine with your evening meal (for example) will delay proper metabolism of the energy in that meal.

Since alcohol contains a large number of calories per gram (not to mention the additional sugar in wine, beer, mixers etc), you are drinking the equivalent of a chocolate bar (in terms of calories and sugar) with every drink.

Alcohol also depresses testosterone levels and raises estrogen levels in men, making them soft, unmuscled and lacking in virility and energy.

Alcohol is also a depressant, meaning that you don’t feel like doing much the day after a drinking session. So you’re less likely to burn of the extra calories from the previous day/evening.

How can I prevent weight gain from alcohol?

  1. Choose a drink that is lower in calories and sugar, such as a spirit with a soda mixer (or diet cola if you like that sort of thing – we won’t talk about the evils of aspartame here). Dry white wine is another option.
  2. Drink less alcohol. Intersperse every alcoholic drink with a non-alcoholic drink, preferably a low-calorie one such as… water! This will also help prevent dehydration.
  3. Don’t eat a calorie dense meal around the time of your alcohol consumption.
  4. Get some activity or exercise on the day following an alcohol drinking session. The PREVAIL product mentioned earlier should help because you won’t feel as ‘poisoned’ so you should feel more like exercising.
  5. Regularly consume a product such as Neuroprime, since the combination of ingredients should offer a degree of assistance to the liver to help it deal with carbs and fats that are being held up due to the presence of alcohol.

Sugar

You know what it’s like; some ‘well meaning’ relative gifts you or someone in your family a huge selection box of chocolate or haribo, or… you get the picture.

People in the office or workplace start bringing in sweet treats to share.

Every time you visit a relative or friend you are offered a mouth-watering range of sweets, chocolate and other sugar-laden delights.

Before you know it, you’ve eaten what feels like your own body weight in sugar and you feel terrible. Bloated, sluggish and generally unwell.

Why is sugar bad?

Most of you reading this will know this already, but some won’t so…

The type of sugar found in sweets and chocolate is highly refined and processed. It is actually an ‘anti-nutrient’. In other words, it has SO LITTLE vitamins etc in it that it actually depletes your own reserves of things like B vitamins.

Sugar is an inflammatory, reactive compound, that unless sequestered away, will damage surrounding tissues. This is why we have insulin; to remove the damaging sugar molecules from the blood and shuttle them away to be stored. Unfortunately, because refined sugar does not really exist in nature, the consumption of this ‘unnatural’ foodstuff often leads to health problems such as insulin resistance and then type II diabetes.

Summary

Although it is still possible to eat a huge calorie surplus in meat and vegetables, the worst offenders for cellular damage and weight-gain are going to be alcohol and sugar. If you can try to minimise the intake of these things as well as taking a supplement like PREVAIL, then you stand a reasonable chance of hitting the New Year at the same weight as you were in November. Perhaps you might consider a fasting month in November to prime your body against weight gain over Christmas.

Also, do not forget that the use of an effective diet pill such as Garcinia Cambogia will aid your efforts to consume less calories and sugar, though they probably won’t blunt your desire for alcohol!
