Understanding the difference between Hunger Versus Appetite
Today I want to explain the difference between hunger vs appetite. Many people do not appreciate the difference between the two but it is a critical difference and therefore something to be aware of. Once you are mindful of the different natures of each of these things, you can use that awareness to help you control your eating patterns.
This is a signal from the body initiated by hormones like ghrelin and leptin that initiate within the actual digestive tract. It’s basically your guts way of saying ‘I am getting nearly empty, I need fuel to keep going. Hunger relates to survival and is very important.
Comes from the mind and is a Psychologically-driven desire for a certain tasty morsel (or two, or three…). Appetite is the thing that can easily lead you into trouble because it sends a signal that you want cream cake or other calorie-rich food when your body doesn’t actually need it.
Essentially, hunger relates to need for fuel, whilst appetite related to desire for tasty/appealing food NOT fuel.
You could think of it like this: Your body could exist quite happily on a diet of fresh raw vegetables and meat, yet your mind would hate that (probably), because it likes tasty, varied, interesting food, not just ‘fuel’.
So, next time you think you are hungry, just take a minute to reflect on the difference between true hunger (the need to fuel the body) and appetite (the desire for something to eat). DO you really need to eat or is it your mind playing tricks on you? Boredom and habit are big players in appetite-induced over-eating by the way.
Now, of course, there is nothing wrong with a bit of self-indulgence from time to time, just be aware that it IS self-indulgence and not an actual need for chocolate cake.
By the way, since some diet pills, like Garcinia Cambogia, control both hunger and appetite, you will have a reduced appetite for food and a reduced hunger for fuel. This is a fantastic aid to weight loss and looking great! However, the body does need at least 1000 calories per day (more if you are a male and or active) or it will begin to go into fat storage mode, so please do give it the fuel it needs even if the signals are not being received by your brain due to the diet pills.
