Keep the Weight off: A Quick Guide
So you just lost a lot of weight and you want to return to a more normal way of life. You’re tired of the excessive exercising and the strict dieting standards you had to stick to in order to lose that weight. It’s great that you managed to lose unhealthy weight, but there is still some daily maintenance to be done to ensure that you don’t gain that weight back. Here is what you need to do to keep the weight off.
Avoid Old Habits
Look at what got you into your former situation in the first place. Consider how you went from a healthy person to an unhealthy one and make the eating habits and dietary practices you used to become overweight. Once you have identified them, then you can properly avoid them.
For some people, it is the stress eating that causes them to become overweight. They eat as a coping mechanism for the times they feel emotional and overwhelmed. If that is your problem then you need to find a different coping mechanism. Take up a hobby, make some new friends or just find healthy foods that can fill your cravings. None of these are simple things to do, but they are necessary if you are going to break unhealthy habits.
Whatever it is that kept you on the path to obesity, you need to be marking it and avoiding it. This can involve changing some aspects of your life, but consider all the work you went through to get to where you are now. That should motivate you to make the changes you need to.
Make Healthy New Habits
Once you have lost the weight, you don’t have to go to dieting extremes to keep your figure. You just need to make sure you are making healthy choices more often than not. You can start by planning out your grocery list before you go shopping. That way, you won’t be tempted to buy things that aren’t good for you. Make sure you buy plenty of healthy snack foods (like fruit, veggies and yoghurt) to fill the space between meals. A lot of people who eat healthy meals tend to cheat on snack time, but you are going to want to change that practice right away.
You should also incorporate some exercise into your daily routine. If you can walk to work, then do so. If you have trouble getting to the gym, just walk around your neighbourhood. Maybe you can’t get in a good exercise regimen every day. That’s okay, as you can make up for it by exercising more on the weekends. Look at your schedule and make it a habit to start exercising regularly. You will be surprised at the difference it will make.
Make Adjustments as Necessary
Once you have managed a sizeable weight loss, you need to keep monitoring your weight to see how you are doing. You can’t just assume that the pounds will stay off. After all, you had a weight problem in the past, and it is possible that it will come back. Not all weight problems are entirely under our control. There may be genetics involved or some sort of illness or condition that needs to be treated.
But simply monitoring your weight can help you understand what changes you need to be making to keep the weight off. If your weight is coming back too quickly, then you need to start making some changes. As you adjust your diet, you can tell whether your efforts are enough or if you need to buckle down on the dieting or exercising more because of how you weight is fluctuating.
You also want to be careful about weight fluctuations that are too severe. Jumping back and forth by 10 or twenty pounds in a month or two is not healthy. You need to find what works for you as far as dieting and exercising are concerned to maintain a healthy weight. It’s okay to move up and down the scale a little, but if your fluctuations are frequent and more than a dozen pounds within a month, you need to consider making some serious dietary changes.
